Review: Bobbi Brown vs MAC gel eyeliner

Hi Glamifys,

I have been using Mac’s gel eyeliner in blacktrack for years. I tried the maybelline gel eyeliner and didn’t find it suitable for my sensitive eyes. So I had to stick to blacktrack if I wanted to put it in the waterline.

Recently, I thought about restocking with Bobbi brown’s gel eyeliner instead. It was more expensive at $40 vs MAC’s $30 odd or maybelline at $15.

In all honesty, it’s hard to say which one is better because they are both good in their own ways. Here’s why:

MAC’s blacktrack:

Extremely black and opaque
Safe for the waterline
Goes on smoothly without tugging the skin
Stays on for a very Long time
No smudging and no need to set with eye shadow

Smudges easily if it touches water
( for eg, if you cry and you rub your eyes, you risk panda eyes)
Once it sets, you cannot go over the line too many times or it might flake off

Bobbi Brown’s black ink #1:

Safe for waterline
Goes on smoothly without tugging the skin
Stays on for a very Long time
No smudging and no need to set with eye shadow
Does not flake off
Takes a lot of rubbing and water before it smudges
Since it is less opaque, appropriate for looks that require a softer eyeliner finish

Not as black or opaque as MAC
More difficult to remove and you will need a good eye makeup remover

The line on the right is mac blacktrack and left is Bobbi brown black ink.

As you can see, the difference in colour is pretty obvious.

After adding a few drops of water and rubbing very hard ( causing my skin to turn red! That’s how long lasting gel liners are 🙂 )

Mac’s colour has wiped off so much more than Bobbi

I personally prefer each one for different looks. When I am wearing dark eyeshadows and need an eyeliner that stands out from all that darkness, I will pick Mac. For day to day use with neutral or soft colours, Bobbi seems to be more appropriate since the colour isn’t harsh.

The bottles are of the same size and weight 3 grams each. They come in a glass bottle which Must be tightened properly after each use. They are less than $10 apart. Since the bottles are glass, you will need to be extremely careful with handling them.

oops, my
MAC’s description has worn off after many months of using it.

Also, blacktrack is made in Canada and Black ink is made in Belgium. If that made any difference haha :p

Let me know which one you like!
