Comparison & swatches: MAC Pro Longwear Pencil liner vs other brands

Hi Glamifys,

Mac recently launched their new pro longwear eye liner range and I purchased the pencil in DEFINEDLY BLACK for about SGD 30 (sorry I couldn’t remember the price).

I was previously using the Mac Pro longwear eye liner in black ice and was told by my favorite MAC mua, Cynthia, that definedly black is more pigmented than black ice.

Cynthia’s professional makeup tip is that for the pro longwear pencils to last longer all day, set the pencils with a matte black eyeshadow like MAC’s carbon. 🙂

Both have no glitter in them so it’s safe for sensitive eyes and the waterline as well.

Since the only eyeliners I have consistently repurchased are MAC’s technakohl liner in graph black as well as pro longwear in black ice, I thought of giving the new color a try.

Here is pro longwear in definedly black

As I thought it might be interesting to compare the intensity and pigmentation of the pencil with others, here is my list.

From left to right.

#1- Mac Pro longwear definedly black

#2- Mac Pro longwear black ice

#3- Bourjois Kohl & contour 16 hours

#4- Silkygirl 20 hour perfect stay
(retractable/ no sharpening required)

#5- Makeup forever aqua eyes

#6- Mac PowerPoint pencil in engraved

#7- Gelpresso waterproof gel liner ( not safe for waterline as it is full of glitter plus retractable/ no sharpening required)

#8- Mac technakohl in graphblack (retractable/ no sharpening required)

#9- Kpalette 24 hour real lasting pencil

Depending on the type of eyeliner intensity you like, you can go for the blackest black ones like those from Mac Pro longwear or k palette. You could also go for something softer like the makeup forever aqua eyes or Mac technakohl liner.

After allowing the liners to set for 2 minutes, I did the rub test. I gently rubbed each liner to see if the color changed.

Both the kohl pencils from bourjois and Mac technakohl smudged although the color intensity did not change. They are great for using as a base for eyeshadows or for blending a smokey eye.

Gelpresso came out very easily and the glitter was everywhere.

There were 4 that stood out after the rub test.

#1 Mac Pro longwear definedly black
#2 Mac Pro longwear black ice
#4 Silkygirl perfect liner
#9 kpalette liner

Also, I ran the liners under water and rubbed them again.

Most rubbed off however the winners are:
#1 Mac Pro longwear definedly black
#2 Mac Pro longwear black ice
#9 kpalette liner

I would add the Silkygirl pencil too since for a ridiculously affordable drugstore pencil, it still had great staying power after the water and rub test.

Hope you enjoyed this experiment 🙂

Cheers,
